David Bird has written over sixty books on the game and is bridge correspondent for the Mail on Sunday and the London Evening Standard. The world's top writer of humorous bridge, David first made his name with stories of the bridge-crazy monks of St Titus.

You're looking for a book that explains basic bridge cardplay clearly and simply? You've found it! David Bird, author of more than 70 bridge books, is well known for his lucid and easy-to-read style. Will you find the first few lessons simple to follow and then get lost as the level of play shoots into the stratosphere? No. The same level is maintained throughout the book and you will not find a single advanced play within these covers. Instead all the basic plays and techniques are covered - those that will suffice on 90% of the deals you will encounter.

The book is designed to be used in conjunction with organized bridge lessons. However, if you prefer to teach yourself you will have no difficulty whatsoever in following the advice and recommendations. By the time you reach the end of the book, you will be able to play better than at least half of the world's bridge players. There are 18 lessons with a question and quiz at the end of each chapter to monitor your progress.

Review - "Have you just learned bridge's basics? If so, you are probably feeling overwhelmed. It is the biggest drawback of the game that the "elementary" parts fill a 200-page book. However, if you can get those details straight in your mind, your game will improve at an impressive rate. But are you still plagued with doubt? If so, and you would like to improve your declarer-play, a good place to start is Bridge Cardplay Made Easy by David Bird (Finesse, 2003). The book, which includes many quizzes and key pointers, is not for absolute beginners, because it assumes some knowledge. For a player with a little experience, though, it is excellent." Phillip Alder, www.phillipalderbridge.com, column for 20 November 2003.
